No Password Required

The world in the 21st century has progress such that passwords are a way of life. We use them to log on to our computers, IPads, cell phones and other electronic devices. We use passwords for our online accounts such as emails, credit cards, bank accounts, bill paying and shopping. We have them in our homes attached to our alarm systems. Our society is so inundated with passwords that we sometimes feel that everything in life requires a password.

Some people have attempted to attach the password requirement to leadership also. They say that the password to being a leader or becoming a leader is, "Gifted One" They believe that one must possess a special gift or a particular set of skills, talent, or charisma to be a leader. Although one or all of these can be found in leaders they are not a requirement for becoming a leader. It is not my intention to make light of those things and I agree that they can be an important ingredient of leadership. But to make them a requirement being a leader is not to do proper justice to leadership.

Leadership can be learned and it can be taught. So without any special skill set a person can be developed and be trained to be a leader. This won't happen on your efforts alone. There must be a person or persons who come alongside you to guide you in your effort. Through the process of coaching and mentoring a person learns to lead and increase their capacity to lead. There are three things that a person must supply in order to be developed into a leader:

  • Desire: This is the want to be a leader. A person either has it on they don't. This can't be given or imparted.
  • Discipline: This is the commitment to pay the price and stick with it. This is where you say, "I won't give up on my quest to be a leader no matter what."
  • Drive: This is the motivation and focus, to stay on course until completion of your development into a leader.

Although becoming a leader does not require a password it does require work. No one just stumbles into being a leader. The skills of leadership don't just fall out of the sky upon a person. They come in one of two ways, either by being born with them or by learning them through training and development through a coach or mentor. So then, you can become a leader and you can be a very good leader. Put in the work and stay determined and listen to those training you. It will not happen overnight but if you follow through and maintain your desire, discipline, and drive I guarantee that it will happen.

Leadership is not a closed fraternity nor is it only for a chosen few. Leadership is for whoever wants it and will pursue it. There is and always will be a need for good leaders. They are needed in every segment of life. We need good leaders in the home, school, church, workplace, community, sports, entertainment, government (both local and national), business and the list goes on. There is a cry for leaders. You are needed and you are needed now.

So accept the challenge to lead and respond to the call to lead. Get started today don't delay it any further. Stop looking at your deficiencies and look at your potential. It has been said that the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Start your journey to becoming a leader by taking your single step. Your first step could be to buy and begin reading a book on leadership, maybe listening to a leadership CD, or maybe beginning the process of finding your leadership mentor.

It doesn't matter which of these you choose as your first step because you will eventually do all three. The issue is getting started and getting started now. All excuses and barriers have been removed. Someone is waiting for you to lead them. Someone is waiting for you to influence them. Someone is waiting for you to impact their life. Don't keep them waiting. Leadership is summoning you to come to your appointment and let the leader in you come forth. Come on into the world of leadership, no password is required.
